CHOMP!NG AT THE BIT: TheDentist Returns

After a long hiatus, I am returning to the felt.

Today, I am playing in the U.S. Poker Championship (Event #8 Stud8B). As of this writing we have reached the dinner break.

Due to limited WiFi access, updates are slow. I know the WSOP finishes up tonight but if you want to keep up-to-date with the USPC, follow @SammyTheDentist on Twitter or http://blog.ptseats.com/uspc/.

Dinner. Shower. Chomp!

CHOMP!NG AT THE BIT: Recap of ESHC Final Table (Event #2) [3 of 3 posts]

40-minute rounds
Ante: 500
SB: 2,500
BB: 5,000

Updated Chip Counts

Seat 2) Justin Villa [T$320K]
Seat 3) Ryan D'Angelo [T$200K]
Seat 4) Ilya Dyment [T$112K]
Seat 6) Matt Gunter [T$125]
Seat 8) Anthony Moran [T$70K]

D'Angelo took down the blinds on the first hand of the next level.

Round 6: Once again, Villa (SB) and D'Angelo (BB) battled in blinds. The table deferred to the blinds. Villa called from the SB and D'Angelo raised to T$10K. Villa called the min raise. Flop: Qd-Tc-2s. Check by Villa. Bet (T$18K) by D'Angelo to win the pot.

D'Angelo continued to battle, this time from the SB, as he called and Dyment checked his option. The flop brought 9d-8c-5s and a T$13K bet from D'Angelo took down the pot.

From under-the-gun ("UTG"), Moran raised to T$13,500, Dyment reraised to T$60K, and Moran went all-in. Dyment called (from the SB).

Moran: QsQh
Dyment: AhKs

Flop: 6d-5h-Tc
Turn: 2h
River: 8s

Moran won the 158K pot to stay alive.

Every hand seemed to be a battle of the blinds as the rest of the table continued to fold. This time, not so. D'Angelo called from late position, Dyment folded the button, Gunter raised to T$13K from the SB, and Moran surrendered his BB. Flop: 6c-8s-3d. Gunter checked. D'Angelo takes a stab with T$20K to take down the pot.

Dyment showed some life with a preflop raise of T$17K to win the blinds. A couple of hands later, Dyment was in the BB and his only competion was D'Angelo in the SB. The flop of 3d-Kd-Qd went check/check. Turn: Ad. D'Angelo checked only to call Dyment's T$5K bet. River: As. Second verse, same as the first...D'Angelo check/called Dyment's bet of T$15K. D'Angelo turned over his card to reveal Kc6d for a flush. Dyment folded.

Villa took down the next round of blinds with a T$15K preflop bet.

Button moved to Dyment and D'Angelo raised to T$13K from late position. Dyment reraised all-in. Folds back to D'Angelo who called.

Dyment: JJ
D'Angelo: QQ

Flop: K-2-9
Turn: 5
River: K

5th place = Ilya Dyment

That pot made D'Angelo the chip leader with T$375K (approximately 45% of the chips in play).

Round 7: Pressing on, D'Angelo raised from UTG (T$13K) and only Villa called (from the BB). "Check dark," declared Villa. Flop: 3c-2h-Qd. A bet of T$20K won the pot for D'Angelo.

After an all-in and call, Gunter's 44 held up against D'Angelo's AsQs for a T$180+K pot.

Action was paused (18:28 remaining in the level) for a chip count.

Seat 2) Justin Villa [T$247K]
Seat 3) Ryan D'Angelo [T$331K]
Seat 6) Matt Gunter [T$189K]
Seat 8) Anthony Moran [T$131K]

[Note: the day concluded with a four-way chop.]

CHOMP!NG AT THE BIT: Recap of ESHC Final Table (Event #2) [2 of 3 posts]

40-minute rounds
Ante: 500
SB: 2K
BB: 4K

The dust settled into a hypnotic residue that lulled the table into several preflop-raise wins...until Villa and D'Angelo started to tangle in a meta game.

Round 1: Villa preflop raised to T$11K but D'Angelo, in position, reraised to T$31K, to take down the pot.

Round 2: Villa preflop raised to T$12K and D'Angelo called. Flop: 9s-2d-Kc. Villa/D'Angelo check. Turn: Jh. Villa checked. D'Angelo bet T$20K and won the pot. [V vs. D, to be continued]

Folds all the way around to Capritta in the SB. She raised to T$13K and Villa called in the BB. Flop: Js-4c-3d. Capritta bet T$21K. Villa tanked for about a minute before releasing the hand.

The table seemed to slow down/tighten up. Folds all the way around to Villa on the button. He made it T$11K to go. D'Angelo folded the SB but Dyment reraised to T$31K from the BB. Villa asked, "How much more behind?" "About 100K," replied Dyment. Fold by Villa.

Another span of round-the-table-preflop-raise wins without incident.

Round 3: Folds around to Villa on the button who raised to T$11K. From the SB, D'Angelo popped it to T$31K. Villa tanked before shoving all-in. D'Angelo called. Pot = T$327K

Villa: JT
D'Angelo: TT

Flop: A-Q-7
Turn: J
River: 3

Round 4: A battle of preflop raise/reraises between Villa and D'Angelo...culminating with a comment from Villa, "Next time you three-bet me, I'm gonna four-bet it."

On the very next hand, all players folded to D'Angelo on the button, who raised to T$12K. Dyment folded the SB while Gunter called from the BB and checked in the dark. Flop: 5-A-Q. D'Angelo bet T$13K. Gunter reached for chips and raised to T$33K. D'Angelo announced, "all-in," and Gunter mucked.

The next clash occurred between Dyment and Capritta; resulting in Capritta taking it down with a sizable (T$39K) preflop reraise.

Round 5: Battle of the blinds. Villa called from the SB and D'Angelo checked in the BB to see a flop of 9c-Ad-Js. Check, check. Turn: Ts. Double check. River: Jd. Villa bet and D'Angelo called the T$4K. "Five, I mean, six high," announced Villa. D'Angelo flipped over K2 to win the pot.

Not to be deterred, Villa applied pressure with a series of preflop raises (in the last five minutes of the level) to take down the the antes/blinds (at T$9K a pop).

The very last hand of the level brought fireworks.

From early position, D'Angelo preflop raised to T$10K. The rest of the table folded, except for Capritta in the BB, who made the call.

Flop: Jc-Tc-8s.

Capritta checked.
D'Angelo tossed in a bet of T$15K and was greeted by an all-in from Capritta.

D'Angelo: "Can I get a count?"
Capritta: "99K more."
D'Angelo: "I call."

Capritta: Ac7c
D'Angelo: 9sTs

Turn: 4s
River: Th

6th place = Joanne Capritta

[to be continued...]

CHOMP!NG AT THE BIT: Recap of ESHC Final Table (Event #2) [1 of 3 posts]

In a role familiar to him, Matt Gunter came to the final table as chip leader (T$285K). The night before, he finished Event #1 with the most chips (in a two-way chop). Considering Gunter's sizable chip lead and back-to-back final tables, he was the early favorite.

The final table started with antes/blinds of 500/1,500/3,000 and a flurry of action. In a span of 15 minutes, the field was 30% lighter.

Nursing a short stack, Francis Anderson found a hand he liked enough to shove all-in and found a caller in Joanne Capritta. Unfortunately for Anderson, his AQ was up against AK. The board brought no help. 10th place = Francis Anderson.

Two hands later, Mike Griffen leveraged his short stack against Ilya Dyment's big blind. A6 vs. Q2, respectively. Five cards later, a Broadway board led to a chop and a resigned, "That's okay. I'll take it," from Griffen. The relief quickly turned into excitement when Griffen found his next hand (AA) all-in against Mona Harb's AK. A flop of J-9-T brought disappointment on the turn with a Q, followed by an early exit by Griffen with a river J. 9th place = Mike Griffen.

Joanne Capritta was next to rejoin the fast-paced, all-in action. Her cowboys survived Gunter's big-stack reraise with A4 for a T$60K+ pot.

A coin-flip situation, AQ vs TT, brought another elimination when Justin Villa's pocket pair held up. 8th place = Lou Procopio.

In a hand that would prove to be an indicator of things to come, the table folded around to Ryan D'Angelo (on the button). D'Angelo called the T$3K BB. Dyment folded in the SB but Gunter preflop raised to the standard T$9K. D'Angelo called the T$6K more. Flop: 7-9-3. A T$5K bet from Gunter was met with a raise (total of T$22K) from D'Angelo. After a bit of thought, Gunter mucked.

On the very next hand, Gunter strikes again (in what appears to be a "steam reraise") by forcing Mona Harb into a decision for all of her chips. After much thought, Harb calls for her tournament life with KJs vs. 33. Board: 6-3-4-A-Q. 7th place = Mona Harb

Updated Chip Counts

Seat 2) Justin Villa [~T$200K]
Seat 3) Ryan D'Angelo [~T$100K]
Seat 4) Ilya Dyment [~T$100K]
Seat 6) Matt Gunter [~T$250K]
Seat 8) Anthony Moran [~T$60K]
Seat 10) Joanne Capritta [~T$100K]

As the next level of blinds approached, D'Angelo and Gunter tangled in a few preflop raise/reraise battles that resulted in minor stack changes but clearly defined their candidacies for Table Captain. Sliding under the radar and bringing a pause in the D'Angelo-Gunter skirmishes, Anthony Moran made a preflop, all-in raise to take down the antes and blinds before the level jumped to 500/2K/4K.

It was a short-lived break from the norm.

On the very first hand of the next level, D'Angelo preflop raised to T$8K (it appeared that he did not realize the blinds had increased). Gunter pounced from the button and reraised to a total of T$31K. Back to D'Angelo who announces an all-in bet. Gunter insta-calls.

Before the cards are flipped up:

D'Angelo: "Do you have a high card?"

Gunter: (dryly) "Yeah."

D'Angelo reveals JJ, as Gunter rolls over KK.

Pot = T$209K
Flop: 7-2-5
Turn: Q
River: J

D'Angelo moved into the chip lead.

[End of part 1. Heading down to play in today's Event #3. Look for part 2 later today.]

CHOMP!NG AT THE BIT: Good News. Bad News.

Good news: iPhone
Bad news: thunderstorm sans umbrella

"What ever you do, don't get the iPhone wet," the last words I hear as I leave the store. "No problem," I say to myself. After all, I am only five blocks away. Four blocks later...Torrential rain. High winds. Lightning and thunder, oh my!

I shove the iPhone deep into the plastic shopping bag and seal it shut. Next, find shelter and wait out the storm.

Ducking under the nearest awning, I find myself huddling with 20 others on the sidewalks of NYC. My eyes dart to steal a look at my new toy. Opening the bag, I am not disappointed. Dry as can be. Hmm, considering the strength of the storm, looks like I am going to be here awhile. How will I spend my time? "Here, shiney, shiney, new iPhone.
